About the Larimer County Jane Jefferson Democratic Club

Betsy Markey at a Janes BreakfastThe Larimer County Jane Jefferson Club provides a venue for members to learn about politics and political issues, to support efforts for members and the public to meet Democratic candidates, and to provide a forum for people to witness debate on issues, raise funds, and to coordinate with other organizations, political events, and gatherings.

The objective of the Jane Jefferson Democratic Club is "To promote the Jeffersonian kind of democracy," which means doing the most good for the greatest number of people.

Janes History

The Jane Jefferson Democratic Club is the oldest women's political group in the USA. Named after the mother of Thomas Jefferson, Jane Randolph Jefferson (1720-1776), the Club was founded at the beginning of the 20th Century to encourage women's understanding of and involvement in the political process. It is an "activist" group providing seminars and networking with other groups to define and promote the Democratic agenda.
The Club began in Denver during the first decade of the 20th Century as a discussion and action group to support newly franchised voters and was later replicated in towns and cities across the state.  It is affiliated with the Colorado Federation of Democratic Women, Inc., and membership is now open to both men and women.

Mary Bradford, founder of the club, said she selected Thomas Jefferson's mother as a namesake because she fulfilled a promise to her husband that Thomas would get a college education. She was born in London and reported to be a descendant of Charlemagne, married Peter in Virginia and became a widow at a young age and raised eight children. Research shows that Thomas didn't speak of her in public and had difficulties being overseen by his mother when he became the de facto patriarch of the large estate at age 14. He did name one of his daughters Jane Randolph, after his mother, but she died at 17 months.
